Consumers are demanding ever high levels of comfort from their sports and Activewear and, being a fashion based industry the demand for new styles and technical materials is booming. This has led to both a dramatic shortening of lead times coupled with a demand for ever more accurate and faster testing.

Fortunately the latest Versaperm mass-spectrometry based permeability testing system meets both demands.  Not only can it simultaneously determine the vapour permeability for multiple gases through a sample but it achieves accuracies that are measured in the Parts Per Million (PPM) or Parts Per Billion (PPB) ranges.

Testing is fast – taking just a few hours.  The permeability of any gas or group of gases can be measured, not just for water vapour and oxygen but including hydrocarbons, solvents and CO2.

Unfortunately, ISO fabric testing takes several weeks to make even a single permeability measurement and this adds a massive time lag into the process.  Fortunately, Versaperm has come up with a system that slashes this testing time down to as little as thirty minutes for many fabrics.  Moreover, its latest range of equipment can test several fabrics at exactly the same.

The equipment is simple to use and requires at most minimal maintenance.  It has been designed so that it can be used for both product development and the quality control of fabrics and garments.  It is ideally suited to textiles that need to allow the passage of water vapour (breathable), but strongly resist both water droplets and wind.

Once development is completed it may be useful, for marketing and compliance reasons to demonstrate that the fabric complies against the historical ISO standard (15496:2004), and so Versaperm also produces a conventional gravimetric system for this purpose.  ISO testing takes weeks or months compared to the few hours for Versaperm's instrumental testing.

For companies not wishing to own their own systems, Versaperm also offers a fast-turn-around laboratory service and a consultancy.
